Carbon Tax 碳税

A carbon tax is a levy on fossil fuels that produce carbon dioxide, a major cause of climate change. The tax is levied per ton of carbon dioxide released, and can be paid either by the energy companies that extract the fossil fuels or the companies and individuals that burn them. In either case, the tax usually gets passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for coal-fired electricity, gasoline and other carbon-intensive products. The money raised from a carbon tax can help pay for other environmental policies or reduce other taxes, while the resulting higher energy prices are meant to get people to use less – and greener – energy.
