Insider trading is the illegal use of undisclosed material information for profit. It can be committed by anyone with access to valuable non-public information about a company. That makes a company’s high-level executives and their relatives and friends worth particular attention for regulators. Illegal insider trading is harmful because it violates the market principal of transparency. Acting upon privileged information gives the trader an unfair advantage over other investors.
